Ex-SLAYER Drummer DAVE LOMBARDO Doesn't Find it Difficult To Switch Among Three Different Styles Of Punk

SUICIDAL TENDENCIES drummer Dave Lombardo has told Billboard in a new interview that late SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman introduced him to punk. ”He was a big SUICIDAL fan, [and one-time SUICIDAL lead guitarist] Rocky George was one of his best friends,” Dave explained. ”At first, the [other guys in the band] were kind of apprehensive. As time went on, and they saw me and Jeff singing the lyrics when we were in a van traveling up the coast of California to San Francisco, they recognized a [like-minded kind of] drive in punk.”

Lombardo, who is also playing with DEAD CROSS and MISFITS, went on to say that it doesn’t take much adjusting to switch among three different styles of punk. ”All of these styles are brewing in me, but SUICIDAL has a particular groove and funk and swing that’s different than DEAD CROSS, which is just over-the-top brutal as fast as you can play,” he said. ”And then you have the MISFITS, which is punk, but a rock ’n’ roll kind of vibe. For some reason, I don’t find [switching among the bands] difficult. The most difficult part is dealing with the jetlag! I mean, some of the SUICIDAL songs are tricky. They have these trickly little changes in parts that you have to remember. But I remember when I did that [recent SUICIDAL] show in Brooklyn after touring for six weeks in Europe with DEAD CROSS], it felt like a smooth transition.”

Lombardo was effectively fired from SLAYER after sitting out the group’s Australian tour in February/March 2013 due to a contract dispute with the other bandmembers. He has since been replaced by Paul Bostaph, who was previously SLAYER’s drummer from 1992 until 2001 and recorded four albums with the band.

SUICIDAL TENDENCIES’ latest release is ”STill Cyco Punk After All These Years”, which came out September 7. It is a re-recording and re-imagining of a Cyco Miko (Mike Muir) solo album recorded in 1995, ”Lost My Brain! (Once Again)”.
